Kidd cleaned and bandaged the crease on the side of Lobo's hip. The bullet had carved a three inch groove through the flesh below the hip bone, but it was not too deep. It had bled a little, but wrapping a cloth around his waist to cover the injury pretty much took care of the wound.
Breed had taken the temporary stop to look over their back-trail. He arrived as Kidd was tying a knot in the bandage.
'Ain't bad,' Kidd told him. 'Still, it's going to hurt while we're riding.'
'Can't be helped,' Breed said. 'We've got a shadow. I caught sight of him; he's about a half mile behind us. Would have missed him if I hadn't used my field glasses. He was right on our tracks, moving at a pretty good pace.'
'We'll lose him at the hard-pan on the mesa,' Lobo spoke with confidence. 'Once going over the rock and shale, he'll be left behind scratching his head.'
'That's right,' Kidd said. 'How many posses have we lost up on the mesa â a dozen?'
Breed sat atop his horse, allowing the animal to snatch a bite of tall grass. It wasn't a good habit for a horse to get into, but the animal would need its strength.
'We take no chances,' he explained to the others. 'Once we reach hard ground, we start our zigzag, then we reverse our direction. If need be, we'll set up an ambush and pay back whoever it is tracking us. We owe him for the deaths of three of our men and the Pratt brothers.'
'We could set up for him now,' Lobo suggested. 'Two of us can get off the trail, while all three horses continue. He'll walk right to us.'
'Don't forget, that very thinking got Mont and our Indian friends kilt,' Kidd tossed out the reminder. 'If we ambush him, I want a huge advantage, and I mean a very huge advantage.'
'You going yella on us?' Lobo challenged.
'If I had been one second slower getting to cover, I'd be dead now!' Kidd barked his response. 'And on the other side, the Pratt boys and Mont weren't so lucky. I could hear them being killed â by a single rifleman.' He put a hard stare on Lobo. 'You get that? One man put all three of them down ⦠with one shot each!' He snorted his contempt. 'I'm not fool enough to take on someone with that kind of skill, not without every advantage in the world working in my favor!'
'Enough talk,' Breed silenced the pair. 'We'll lose him on the mesa, by using the same tricks that worked on every other posse we've had to shake. If he shows up down the road in a day or two, then we will deal with him.'
'Speaking of down the road,' Lobo said. 'Where we going?'
'To pay Robby a visit. He set us up.'
'What?' Kidd cried. 'No way!'
'Why would he do that?' Lobo wanted to know. 'What would he have to gain?'
Breed waved his hand to stop the protests.
